An ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of the body’s internal structures. This technology is essential in pregnancy, providing key insights into the pregnancy’s growth and development within the uterus.

Understanding how ultrasounds work and why they are important can help women make informed decisions about their pregnancies.

Ultrasounds During Pregnancy

Ultrasounds play a critical role in confirming pregnancies. While a positive pregnancy test is an essential first step, an ultrasound is needed to verify your pregnancy and determine its viability. This includes detecting signs of life, such as a heartbeat.

At MyLife Medical & Resource Center, we offer no-cost ultrasounds for clients who have received a positive pregnancy test at our center.

There are two primary types of ultrasounds used during pregnancy:

  • Transvaginal Ultrasound: Performed in early pregnancy, this ultrasound involves inserting a transducer into the vagina to produce clear images of the pregnancy.
  • Abdominal Ultrasound: Conducted by moving a transducer over the abdomen, this type of ultrasound is typically used later in pregnancy.

Unlocking Key Details

Ultrasounds provide three critical pieces of information about your pregnancy:

  1. Age: Knowing how far along you are helps determine which pregnancy options are available to you.
  2. Location: An ultrasound can confirm the location of the pregnancy. In rare cases, a pregnancy may implant outside the uterus (ectopic pregnancy), which poses a serious health risk and requires immediate medical attention.
  3. Viability: Ultrasounds can reveal if your pregnancy is still growing (viable) or if a miscarriage may be taking place. With about 26% of pregnancies ending in natural miscarriage, it’s important to check as this ensures you receive the appropriate follow-up care. A pregnancy test alone cannot identify a miscarriage.
