Woman weighing abortion and adoption while considering her unexpected pregnancy options.

If you are facing an unplanned pregnancy, the choice between abortion and adoption can feel impossibly heavy.

You may be weighing what fits your finances, your relationships, and your future.

Both paths carry real consequences, and you deserve clear information about each one before deciding.

Abortion is often presented as the quickest way to move on, but it carries health considerations that are not always discussed up front.

Adoption, on the other hand, has evolved in recent decades and gives birth mothers more choice and support than many women realize.

Contact MyLife Medical and Resource Center to get the help and facts you need as you weigh your options.

How Abortion Works

There are two types of abortion. Medical abortion, sometimes called the “abortion pill”, uses two drugs (mifepristone and misoprostol) and is approved by the FDA only through 10 weeks of pregnancy.

Risks of medical abortion can include:

  • An incomplete abortion, which may require a follow-up surgical procedure
  • Heavy and prolonged bleeding
  • Infection
  • Fever
  • Digestive discomfort

Surgical abortion is performed in a clinic or hospital. The cervix is dilated, and specialized instruments and suction are used to remove the pregnancy from the uterus. Depending on the procedure, pain management may include local anesthesia, sedation, or general anesthesia.

There are also risks associated with surgical abortion, which can include, but are not limited to:

  • Perforation of the uterus
  • Damage to the cervix
  • Scar tissue on the uterine wall (which could lead to infertility)
  • Infection

Research has also connected abortion with higher rates of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, sleep disturbance, and suicidal behaviors.

These mental health effects do not always appear right away. For some women, they surface months or even years later.

What Adoption Looks Like Today

Adoption is a loving choice to give your child a future you are not in a position to provide right now, and you stay in control of the process.

There are three types of modern adoption for you to consider:

Open adoption: You select the adoptive family and stay in regular contact through letters, calls, and visits. You choose the future you want for your child and watch them thrive.

Semi-open adoption: You still help choose the adoptive couple, but communication is handled through a third party, such as an attorney or agency, keeping your personal information private.

Closed adoption: All identifying records are sealed, and there is no ongoing contact. Women often choose this when safety or anonymity matters most.

In most cases, the adoptive family or agency covers prenatal care, delivery, and other pregnancy-related medical bills.

Depending on your situation, additional support for rent, groceries, or other living expenses may also be available.
