When you are concerned about an unplanned pregnancy, you want answers, and you want them fast. However, did you know the time of day you take a pregnancy test can impact how accurate the result is? If you’re early in pregnancy, timing becomes especially important.

Here’s what you need to know about how timing influences test results, and how MyLife Medical & Resource Center can support you with no-cost medical services every step of the way.

Why Morning May Give You the Clearest Answer

Pregnancy tests detect a hormone called hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin)—something your body begins producing shortly after a fertilized egg implants in your uterus. In the earliest days of pregnancy, hCG levels are still very low, so getting a reliable result depends on how concentrated your urine is.

The morning tends to have the highest concentration of hCG because it hasn’t been diluted by fluids yet. That’s why testing after you wake up often gives the most accurate outcome, especially before or after a missed period.

What If You Test Later?

Yes, you can take a pregnancy test in the afternoon or evening, but it may not be as precise. Your urine becomes more diluted as you go about your day, drinking water or other fluids. This can make it harder for the test to detect hCG if your levels are still low.

If testing later in the day is your only option, limit how much you drink for a few hours beforehand to keep your urine more concentrated. Still, morning is your best bet when you’re hoping for clear answers.

Are Early Detection Tests More Reliable?

Early detection pregnancy tests are designed to pick up smaller amounts of hCG and may show a positive result even before your missed period. However, keep in mind that the closer you are to the day of your expected period, the more reliable the result will be.

Even if you’re using an early detection test, morning testing is still ideal. And while those pink or blue lines can be helpful, at-home tests aren’t always conclusive, especially if you’re unsure when you conceived or your cycle is irregular.
