How Does a Pregnancy Test Work?
Pregnancy tests detect a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). After a fertilized egg implants in the uterus, hCG levels rise rapidly, often doubling every two to three days in early pregnancy, and can be detected through urine and blood tests.
Timing matters. Testing too early can lead to a negative result even if pregnancy has begun. For the most accurate result, many women wait until at least one day after a missed period before taking a test.
If your cycle is irregular or you’re unsure when your period is due, waiting about three weeks after sexual intercourse can improve accuracy. Testing first thing in the morning may also help because urine is typically more concentrated.
What Does a Positive Test Mean?
A positive result means hCG has been detected. However, a pregnancy test alone does not provide all the information you may need.
After a positive pregnancy test, the next step is typically an ultrasound. At MyLife Medical & Resource Center, ultrasounds are available at no charge, but a pregnancy test is required first.
An ultrasound can help confirm your pregnancy by:
- Estimating how far along you may be
- Determining whether the pregnancy appears to be located in the uterus (important for identifying a possible ectopic pregnancy)
- Assessing whether the pregnancy appears to be viable, which may include detecting a fetal heartbeat and identifying signs of possible miscarriage
MyLife offers both abdominal and transvaginal ultrasounds, depending on what is most appropriate for your situation.
What If the Test Is Negative?
If your test is negative but your period does not begin, waiting a few days and taking another test may be helpful. Sometimes a false negative occurs because the test was taken too early.
If your period continues to be late and results remain negative, a healthcare provider can help evaluate other possible causes.
If you’re unsure about your results, visit MyLife Medical & Resource Center for a no-cost lab-quality pregnancy test and a private conversation with our team.
