Young woman thinking about STI symptoms

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are spread primarily through sexual contact. These infections may be bacterial, viral, or parasitic, and often go undetected because many people experience no symptoms at all.

Early detection is key to preventing long-term health damage caused by untreated STIs.

At MyLife Medical & Resource Center, we provide comprehensive STI testing and treatment for various STIs. If you’re concerned about possible exposure or want peace of mind, we’re here to help.

Common STIs and Their Symptoms

Chlamydia

Chlamydia can cause painful urination, lower back pain, and painful intercourse. It’s one of the most common bacterial infections and affects the genital tract. Most people don’t notice symptoms, but when they do occur, they can show up within 5–14 days of exposure.

Possible symptoms include:

  • Pain or burning during urination
  • Lower abdominal or back pain
  • Vaginal or penile discharge
  • Rectal pain or discharge
  • Painful intercourse
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Swollen or tender testicles

Chlamydia is diagnosed with a urine test and then treated with antibiotics, but it won’t go away on its own. Left untreated, it can lead to long-term complications.

Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is a bacterial STI that often presents no symptoms, especially in women. If symptoms do appear, they can be mild and easily mistaken for a bladder or yeast infection.

Women may experience:

  • Pain or burning during urination
  • Increased vaginal discharge
  • Irregular bleeding

Men may notice:

  • Discharge from the penis (white, yellow, or green)
  • Burning with urination
  • Pain or swelling in the testicles

Antibiotics can also treat gonorrhea, but due to growing drug resistance, it’s important to follow up to ensure the infection fully clears.

Complications to Watch For: Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)

Chlamydia or gonorrhea that goes untreated can lead to PID in women—a severe infection of the reproductive organs. PID can cause:

  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Infertility
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Pelvic abscesses

Why Early STI Testing Matters

Even without symptoms, STIs can silently damage your health and put your partners at risk. If you’re pregnant or think you might be, getting tested is especially important—some infections can impact your pregnancy’s health.

Early detection also allows for timely treatment, which can prevent long-term health complications like chronic pain, infertility, and certain cancers.

Testing is quick and straightforward, and at MyLife, it’s completely confidential and most testing is offered at no cost to you.
