Adoption Information
When you are dealing with an unexpected pregnancy and you feel that you are not ready to parent, adoption is an option. Adoption allows you to place your baby in a home that is ready and willing to take on the role of parenting, while you continue with your personal goals and dreams.
What kinds of adoption are there?
There are three types of adoption in the US: closed, semi-open, and open. A large majority of adoptions today are open, which allow the birth mother and birth father to be included in the life of the child that has been adopted. The degree of “openness” can be pre-arranged between everyone involved.
Did you know?
- You are in control of every decision made in the adoption process.
- You can choose the adoptive family for your child.
- You decide how involved you’d like to be after the child is placed in his or her adoptive home.
- You choose whether you want a closed, semi-open, or open adoption plan.
- You may receive financial assistance for any child-related expenses.
How will my child feel if I choose adoption?
Many adopted children are incredibly well-adjusted, and while it’s impossible to guarantee it, a majority of them have wonderful relationships with their adoptive families. According to American Adoptions, over 90 percent of adopted children over the age of 5 have positive feelings about being adopted, and 9 out of 10 adoptive families say the relationship they have with their adopted child is “very close.”
