FAQs| Frequently Asked Questions
1.) I already bought a pregnancy test from Wal-Mart. Why do I need to come in and be tested with you?
The pregnancy tests offered by our center are lab-quality, high-sensitivity urine tests with instant results. These tests are accurate as early as 7 to 10 days after conception, usually before a missed period.
At our center, pregnancy tests are generally up to 99% accurate and
- are done in a clinical and private setting
- results will be known during your appointment
- can usually be taken before you miss your period
A positive urine pregnancy test suggests a pregnancy but should always be confirmed with an ultrasound. We offer free ultrasounds following a positive urine pregnancy test in our office.
2.) I am 16, does a parent have to come with me for my appointment?
No. You can come in alone. Even though you are a minor, you have the right to confidential help, except in those cases where mandatory reporting applies, such as suicide risk. We won't provide your records or any information about you to any person without written authorization from you. We won't even tell anyone you came to our door without your written permission.
3.) What do you mean that I "may not need an abortion"? How can you tell?
Many women can avoid having to decide what to do with their unintended pregnancy because about 1 in 5 of all pregnancies end naturally. Pregnancies that end naturally are not viable and result in what are called miscarriages. Who wants to go through the pain, cost, and risk of an abortion if it's not necessary?
A good way to check if you'll miscarry is by ultrasound technology. We recommend you get an ultrasound at a medical facility that will (a) not charge you a fee for the ultrasound and (b) not put you under any obligation when receiving the ultrasound (like trying to sell you other services).
4.) I had sex last night and I think the condom broke. Can I come in today for a pregnancy test?
The hormones in your body that result in a positive pregnancy test can't be detected until 9 to 11 days after fertilization. You just need to wait until after that period of time then call and we will set up an appointment for a pregnancy test.
Each STD has a different incubation period but we can test you for a few of them when you come in for the pregnancy test mentioned above. We can let you know then when other STDs can be tested for.
5.) Can I just walk in or do I need an appointment?
We want to make sure we have a special time set aside to talk with you so it's usually best to have an appointment. However, if you are unable to make an appointment, you can stop in and we will do the best we can to see you right away.
6.) Can I bring someone with me?
Absolutely! It is important to have the support of friends and/or family during an uncertain time. After the initial assessment we can ask your guest to join us--if you choose. It is all up to you.
7.) Do I need to bring anything with me to an appointment?
To protect your confidentiality you will need to bring your valid photo ID. A driver's license or student ID will work. You will be asked to fill out intake forms but no insurance is required and all services are free (some tests require a lab fee but you will know that ahead of time and choose whether or not you want to have those tests done.)
8.) Will MyLIfe Medical tell anyone that I came in for a pregnancy test?
Any and all information shared with us will be kept in the strictest confidence except as required by law or as required for the protection of yourself or others You don't have to worry if your family or friends will find out. We will do everything we can to protect your privacy. Even parking at our building can be fairly confidential. When you park on the back side of our building your vehicle is less likely to be seen from the highway.
9.) I think I’m pregnant, but I’m on the pill. What should I do?
It is rare but possible to get pregnant on the pill. You will need to take a lab quality urine test and if it is positive, you will want to confirm pregnancy with ultrasound technology. We can provide that ultrasound at no charge to you.
10.) How can I go see a doctor if I don’t have any insurance?
There are options available for people who need care even if they don't have insurance. MyLife Medical will provide you with a free pregnancy test, and if necessary, a free ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy. If you qualify we will be able to provide limited prenatal care until Medicaid is confirmed. We can even help you fill out the Medicaid forms to get things rolling.
11.) What does “after abortion help” mean?
The process of recovering from an abortion is different for everyone. We offer support groups for women who have terminated one or more pregnancies whether it was a recent abortion or many years ago. You can receive help in a group setting or one-on-one. We also offer the same service to men who have been involved in an abortion decision.
12.) If I’ve already had an abortion, what can you do to help me?
You may be wondering: "Why do I need help after my abortion experience?" Many women and men have come to MyLife Medical for support. They realize they can't deal with all of the unexpected consequences on their own. We are here no matter what choices you've made.
13.) How do I know if I’ve been exposed to an STD?
If you have been sexually intimate orally, anally, or vaginally, OR had contact in someone's genital area, you have put yourself at risk for an STD. It's really that simple. Since there are many types of STDs it is important that you be tested regularly. We can provide four of these tests at no charge to you. Some STD tests do carry a small lab fee.
14.) Can a condom protect me from an STD/STI?
Condoms can only reduce the chance of infection with STDs. Some STDs (such as Herpes & HPV) are found on the external genitalia--a place condoms don't cover. The only guaranteed protection from these STDs is refraining from any genital to genital contact at all. Anything other than that and you need to be tested.
15.) I was tested for STDs six months ago why would I need to be retested?
Some STDs have a longer incubation period than others meaning that you can test negative for that STD because it hasn't begun to make changes in your body yet--but still be there. Plus, if you have been sexually active with someone else since your initial test or if the person you are with has been with someone else, you need to be retested as you may have been infected since your initial test.
